2022 Beginner’s Photography Class

A relaxed one-day workshop for beginners to learn how to use and understand their DSLR digital camera (bridge/compact/mirrorless cameras also welcome).

Perfect for you if:

  • You have a fancy digital camera but only use it on auto mode (green square)

  • You want to take photos that are perfectly exposed and beautifully composed

  • You’d like to learn how to create soft, blurry backgrounds that you see in professional portraits

  • Love taking photos but are usually disappointed because they never come out as nice as you imagined.

  • Usually, you end up using a mobile phone to take the shot instead of getting the ‘proper camera’ out

  • Don’t have enough time to do a long photography course or boring read manuals to understand your camera

I really enjoyed the course and learnt loads.
— Gaynor Jones
Definitely worth doing this course if you want to get the best out of your camera.
— Victoria Rushworth
My head was buzzing, I came away with a more understanding of how my camera works. Like everything I think the more I practice the easier it will become and can’t wait to get out and about to take some amazing photos.

F.A.Q’S

What will I learn?

The day is a mixture of classroom learning and a practical outdoor session. We will cover topics such as exposure, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in a clear step-by-step format. I will take you from shooting in auto mode to being able to control the camera in full manual mode. We will also discuss composition and how to use natural light to its best advantage.

Where does the workshop take place?

The workshop will be in our studio space: 2 Samphire Court, Ramparts Business Park, Berwick upon Tweed TD15 1TB. We will also be doing a practical outdoor session so make sure you bring a warm outdoor coat.

What does the cost include?

The price for the workshop is £195 per person, this includes tea, coffee, juice and a delicious lunch. You will also be provided with handout materials to take home with you. We only have around 8 workshop attendees at one time so I can provide you with lots of time, and attention, and answer any questions you might have.

What is a DSLR, CSC mirrorless, compact or bridge camera?

A DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera is the large standard type of digital camera you will see photographers using, most professionals have started moving towards more modern ‘mirrorless’ cameras now, as they offer the same quality but are lighter in weight and smaller. Compact and bridge cameras are basically the same but they will fit in your pocket, they can look like mini DSLR cameras but don’t tend to have detachable lenses.

Providing your camera has a dial with P, A, S and M or Av and Tv modes you will be able to attend the workshop.

What would I need to bring?

All you need to bring with you is your camera, fully charged, of course, a memory card and any lenses you own. A notepad and pen will also be useful. There will be lots of notes to take during the day.

Can I get a refund?

Workshop tickets are non-refundable however if you are unable to attend on your booked day, the sum of your ticket can be used as a gift voucher towards our other photography services.

Do you offer 1-on-1 training?

Yes, I do 1-on-1 training. If you are looking for something other than a beginner’s group workshop then please do get in touch to see if I can help. I enjoy mentoring other photographers looking for training in a specific area, for example, shooting in natural light, how to get the best from children in images, posing, editing, business, and marketing advice. We will tailor the day to your exact requirements. The cost is £295 for a half-day session.

Please note I do not mentor professional photographers within a 30-mile radius of Berwick upon Tweed.

Can I buy a Gift Voucher?

Please use this link if you wish to purchase a gift voucher, your family or friend can use the voucher to book or put towards the beginners photography workshop.

Fantastic, well worth it! The tuition was detailed and well presented. It’s great to now know what all the buttons on my camera can do. Sarah is a world of knowledge.

Now I can take my camera out of AUTO mode! I will recommend the workshop to my friends.

Sarah really knows her stuff, she was helpful, approachable and explained the different functions of the camera, some I didn’t even know existed! The course couldn’t have been any better and will enhance my photos in the future.
— Karen Lerpiniere

‘‘Can’t thank you enough, Sarah, what an amazing photography course. It was so relaxed and informal, easy to ask questions, and no feeling intimidated or stupid and I have come away understanding how to use my camera!

There was a lovely group on the course, we smiled all day. The lunch was especially good!

I came home and practised and felt confident about what I was doing so it was definitely worthwhile and well worth the money.’’
